Vxfs performance small files
Limitingthe number of files to the recommended value is especially important if thedirectory is shared through NFS. The following is extracted from Page 79of the release notes of the Veritas Storage Foundation 4. Use multiple directories instead.
This recommendationis applicable to Storage Foundation 5. Was this content helpful? Certain file system metadata must be allocated only from volume 0 in a multi-volume file system. If volume 0 is full, operations such as upgrades and checkpoint creations can fail. If this occurs, you can retry these operations after freeing up space from volume 0. The fcladm , fsadm and vxupgrade utilities will not work on file systems that are larger than 32 TB.
Shrinking a file system may fail if certain types of metadata are allocated in the space that is to be shrunk. Do not use the vxconvert command to convert file systems that are larger than 2 TB.
You must manually convert these file systems to VxFS by backing up the file system data and restoring it to a new VxFS file system. Although these directories are not visible in the name space, they require a file system and must be removed.
See the following TechNote for instructions on how to remove the name attributes directories. Virtual address limitation with bit kernel Installations expected to have a large number of opened files, such as 1 million or more, are recommended to use the bit AIX kernel to avoid memory shortage and performance degradation. Files and directories To maximize VxFS performance for file systems with disk layout Version 6 or earlier, do not exceed , files in the same directory.
About fclear The fclear operation fails if the target file system is percent full. Performance issue with full data clones Expect a performance degradation of approximately 40 percent with full data clones. When a file is copied or moved to a non-VxFS file system, the cp , mv , or cpio command displays the following notice: cp: cannot maintain extent attributes for control To avoid this notice, which is not an error message, use the -E ignore option with the cp , mv , and cpio commands.
If you omit the -E option, warn is the default behavior for the cp , mv , and cpio commands. Memory exhaustion due to small kernel memory heap Veritas strongly recommends that you use the bit AIX kernel for file server workloads on VxFS to avoid possible memory exhaustion.
Issues with a full volume 0 on a multi-volume file system Certain file system metadata must be allocated only from volume 0 in a multi-volume file system. Extents can therefore enhance file system throughput. The VxFS file system provides the following enhancements to the mount command:. See Mounting a VxFS file system.
Most file systems rely on full structural verification by the fsck utility as the only means to recover from a system failure. For large disk configurations, this involves a time-consuming process of checking the entire structure, verifying that the file system is intact, and correcting any inconsistencies.
See About the Veritas File System intent log. The File Change Log can be used by applications such as backup products, webcrawlers, search and indexing engines, and replication software that typically scan an entire file system searching for modifications since a previous scan. Compressing files reduces the space used by files, while retaining the accessibility of the files and being transparent to applications.
Compressed files look and behave almost exactly like uncompressed files: the compressed files have the same name, and can be read and written as with uncompressed files. Reads cause data to be uncompressed in memory, only; the on-disk copy of the file remains compressed. In contrast, after a write, the new data is uncompressed on disk. See About compressing files. VxFS provides online data backup using the snapshot feature. An image of a mounted file system instantly becomes an exact read-only copy of the file system at a specific point in time.
The original file system is called the snapped file system, while the copy is called the snapshot. When changes are made to the snapped file system, the old data is copied to the snapshot. When the snapshot is read, data that has not changed is read from the snapped file system, changed data is read from the snapshot.
Copying selected files from the snapshot file system using find and cpio. Backing up the entire file system using fscat. Initiating a full or incremental backup using vxdump. See About snapshot file systems. A FileSnap is a space-optimized copy of a file in the same name space, stored in the same file system. Freezing a file system is a necessary step for obtaining a stable and consistent image of the file system at the volume level.
Consistent volume-level file system images can be obtained and used with a file system snapshot tool. Synchronizing operations, which require freezing and thawing file systems, are done on a cluster-wide basis. See Freezing and thawing a file system.
VxFS provides superior performance for synchronous write applications. The mount -o datainlog option greatly improves the performance of small synchronous writes. See the fcntl 2 manual page. Added support for more than 64K sub-directories. If maxlink is disabled on a file system, the sub-directory limit will be 32K by default. To enable the maxlink option at mkfs time. For example:. To restart the service, run the following commands:. To avoid this issue, you can also replicate the file to a local file server.
